Recent Work by Erik Nelson

July 29 - September 05, 2020

The Duxbury resident, avid fermentologist, photo/videographer, gardener, youth sports coach, father, husband and artist shares with us his recent work.

Process:
Working in silence and in short bursts of 10-15 minutes multiple times throughout every day, Nelson begins to layer paint on the surface often working on several pieces at a time. The size of his pieces range from 6” to 6’ proving his adaptability to scale. He often uses found objects as brushes, and is constantly exploring new ways to create marks, attempting to exist in that aura of child-like discovery.

Inspiration:
Living on the side of Camel’s Hump, his work is a direct reaction to and iteration of his everyday surroundings. Inspired by the mystery of pattern and color of Mother Nature, Nelson breaks down the shape and color he sees in our natural environment into simple forms and layers giving his compositions great depth.

Sometimes it’s the color of paint picked up from the “oops” bin at Home Depot that drives his palette. Believing there is no such thing as a mistake, Nelson embraces every stroke, mark and color as an outline or beginning of purpose.

Looking Ahead

More Info to come.

2020 Photography Shoot-Out

October 27 - November 25, 2020

This year’s theme is shadows – chosen by last year’s Shoot-Out winner, Orah Moore. Entries can be classic in nature where light is the key element. Entries can be black & white, in color, manipulated, layered or part of a mixed media piece – as long as the photograph is the majority element. Don’t go digging around in the shadows of your archives because a rule of this year’s theme is that your entry needs to have been captured or made between reading these rules and the entry deadline, which is Saturday October 17th.

Submit your entry to Axel’s Gallery and win a chance for a solo exhibition in 2021 plus other incredible prizes. Entries will be not only be judged by a small panel of professionals embedded in the art and photography world of Vermont but by your peers (a person who is equal to another in abilities and qualifications!).
